10 Tips to Train Like a Professional Athlete

In order to train like a professional athlete, you have to be both physically and mentally strong. Whether you are training for a marathon or just want to build more muscle, you have to be 100 percent committed. Here are 10 helpful tips for training like a professional athlete:

Stay hydrated

No matter what type of exercise or sport you engage in, it’s important to drink plenty of water. If you don’t, you can get dehydrated and increase your risk of injuries. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water every day.

Always remember to warm up

Warming up before a physical activity can increase flexibility in your muscles and joins, lowering your risk of injury. If you don’t have a lot of time, try jump roping for five minutes. It can increase your heart rate and get you ready for any activity.

Pay attention to your diet

If you want to train like a professional athlete, you have to fuel your body with nutritious foods. Filling your diet with fruits, vegetables, whole grains and leans meats can give you energy and increase your strength, ultimately improving your athletic performance. Limit fried foods and other junk food, as they can make you feel more tired.

Don’t skimp on sleep

Getting proper rest at night will help your body recover from the day’s activities and improve your athletic performance. Aim to get seven to eight hours of sleep every night.

Lift weights

Lifting weights isn’t just for people who want to pack on a lot of muscles. Including strength training exercises into your professional fitness training routine twice a week can make your body stronger and help you become a better athlete. If you are new to lifting weights, work with a personal trainer in the beginning, so you can learn the proper form.

Train with a buddy

If you train with a family member or friend, he or she can hold you accountable. You will be less likely to skip workout if you know your buddy is counting on you.

Invest in proper gear

While you don’t need to spend thousands of dollars, it’s important to invest in high-quality gear for your sport. For example, if you are a runner, you’ll want to buy a good pair of running shoes that fit your feet just right. The proper gear will help you avoid injuries and perform at your highest level.

Listen to your body

Don’t ignore what your body tells you while you train like a professional athlete. If you feel discomfort or pain, don’t try to play through it. Make an appointment to see a doctor as soon as possible.

Stretch afterward

No matter how long you train for, it’s important to stretch afterward to prevent injury. Take 10 to 15 minutes to stretch your major muscle groups, like your calves, hamstrings and shoulders.

Change Your Routine

It’s a good idea to vary your routine every once in a while to avoid hitting a plateau. For example, if you are a runner, you can change up the intensity of your runs.
